About the Session:

Up to 50% of students who have "built their dreams" of attaining a better life through education drop out before graduating. Many students do not thrive in their new environments because they are overwhelmed by the changes they face at larger institutions. The Transitions Model of William Bridges provides a good foundation for understanding the difficulties these students face and suggests practical ways to assist them in their journey - so they too can build on their dreams. Original research with university students identified which variables are most important and what interventions are needed to support the students. 
 
  At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 

• List 10 psycho-social factors related to retention and latest personality research findings 
• Describe the psycho-social Failure to Thrive Model 
• Take away at least one idea for immediate implementation 
• Learn more about the TypeFocus Careers! personality, interests, and values inventory offered to students by the Career Education Center

About the facilitator:

Dave Wood is a psychologist and the creator of the TypeFocus Career program that is used by hundreds of career centers across North America, including the UDM Career Education Center. He is a frequent speaker at conferences including the Global Career Development Conference in June.
